OF HOMELESS PEOPLE ARE BETWEEN 18 AND 30 YEARS OLD (FEANTSA-2020)
25%
OF HOMELESS PEOPLE in Europe are young (UN Free and Equal Report 2022)
Adult education is an ideal path to inclusion, but not everyone can access it. For homeless people, access to formal education was a utopia due to their situation, but also due to their own educational barriers. However, in recent years, the profile of homeless people has changed, and their return to formal education could be an ideal path to full social inclusion if it is tailored to their needs. This project seeks to generate an innovative adult education model specifically geared toward the new profile of homeless individuals. This model will enable them to develop a range of tools, skills, and self-confidence that will lead to their reintegration into the education system and, consequently, begin a process of social, professional, and personal inclusion.
The profile of homeless adults has changed significantly in recent years. In this project, we will specifically, but not exclusively, address a new profile of younger homeless people, those between 18 and 30 years old. Among them, we can find migrants, young people who have left care, members of LGBTQ+ communities, racialized women, and members of evicted families.
They are mostly young adults without mental illness who have become homeless and with optimal capacities for full social reintegration, but who are susceptible to falling into prostitution, alcoholism, and serious mental disorders that can lead to their lives if not addressed as a priority.
This group includes not only homeless people (those who sleep on the streets and face cold, hunger and constant danger to their own lives, which means their life expectancy is less than 30 years below average, according to the National Comprehensive Strategy for Homeless People 2015-2020), but also those who live in night shelters, temporary accommodation or who depend on the hospitality of family and friends (finding themselves one step away from sleeping on the streets).
